Final Days of Tax Credits
There are Several Incentive programs that are about to expire at the end of this year....in less than three weeks. They are:
$1,500.00 Federal Tax Credit
Up to $1,300.00 State Appliance Rebate Program
Up to $800.00 from Rheem in Manufacturing Rebates
Together that is up to $3,600.00 in incentives that go away at the end of 2010.
I am sure many people are going to have to purchase new equipment in January due to costly repairs and it would be a shame for them to have to pay up to $3,600.00 more for the same furnace and air conditioning equipment but I am sure it will happen. The question is, will it happen to you?
No one can see the future and perhaps your heating system is working fine now, but if it is older than 15 years you may want to take control and get a jump on installing it this month before the rebates and tax credit expire. Don't wait to long, or you may find that their are other people ahead of you who are doing the same thing and have already booked an installation.
Call a company like Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air today to schedule a time when someone can come out, talk to you about your options and plan to install your new system this year before the incentives run out. It's easy. Just pick up the phone and call 916-444-0551 today.

Federal Tax Credit Running Out
A new furnace and air conditioner can save you money in other ways. If your current system is at least 10 years old you may be able to cut your cooling bill drastically as well as your heating bill. Even the most basic systems use less energy than ones installed a decade ago.
Plus with modern requirements on duct work installation and duct testing we can dramatically improve comfort as well as efficiency. It is amazing what dramatic effects can be achieved simply by sealing duct work.
So how does the tax credit work? Well, it is not a rebate or deduction but rather a nonrefundable credit. So when you have qualifying equipment installed by a licensed Heating and air Contractor like Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air, you can give the qualifying documents for your system to your Tax Preparer and they will apply this to your taxes. The credit goes against what you owe, so there are circumstances where there may be little or no credit if you do not owe any taxes for the year. Be sure and talk with a professional tax preparer about this credit and how it would apply to you.
With the year coming quickly to the end it is important to go ahead and get your system scheduled for replacement. Installation dates are running out so be sure and call a reputable company like Bonney to schedule before it's too late.

Reasons To Consider a new Furnace
First of all, let's look at the age of your system. If your Air Conditioner or Heat Pump is less than 10 years old it probably makes more sense to repair it. If you don't have a maintenance plan on a system that old, you will want to contact a NATE certified company to come out and take a look.
(A quick word about NATE. If the technician working on your system is NATE certified, it means that you are working with someone who is serious about heating and air. NATE is a nationally recognized organization that requires not only classroom training, but also a working knowledge in the field. They also require ongoing training in the latest heating and air technologies, which believe me, are changing with every year. It also means that the technician is not new to the business.....learning on your dime. Be sure and ask the technician if he or she is NATE certified and ask for their NATE certification number so you can verify it online. Important to do this since some companies will tell you they are NATE certified because a few of their employees are, but not necessarily the tech they send out to your home.)
Many times a system that is less than 10 years old is repairable, and with a scheduled maintenance plan will last much longer than a system that is not serviced regularly.
So what are some telltale signs that you may want to replace your existing unit?
1. High energy bills. This is not always your heating and air conditioner's fault. Sometimes high bills are because of other factors such as poor insulation, leaky windows, and other equipment in your home that eat up power. You can check with your local utility to see how you compare to your neighbors when it comes to power usage.
2. Constant repairs. If you are having to repair something every season, it may make sense to replace it with a new one that has a good warranty. Those repairs can really add up and generally point to other issues which are sometimes related to an improper installation of your equipment when it was new.
3.Uncomfortable rooms in your home. Remember, a large part of how your system operates has to do with proper air flow. Duct sizing, duct design, static air pressures, proper btu sizing and selection, refrigerant charge, these are all variables that can affect your system's performance and how you actually feel in your home. And this is where many companies fall short, both in training of their technicians and comfort advisors. Be sure and ask questions about duct sizing and static pressures. If the technician you are speaking with is not comfortable about discussing either of these issues it is time to look for a professional.
4.Noise. Believe it or not, many of our service calls are prompted by any unfamiliar or loud sound and that's ok. Even an untrained ear can hear that something just isn't right, and sometimes it's true. That loud banging noise may be a clue that expensive repairs are on the way or that it may be time to consider new equipment.
Well, hope these suggestions will help. When it's all said and done, though, you need to have a company and technician that you can trust. Let's face it, it takes years of experience to understand heating, cooling, and air flow and there are way too many "professional" out there who sound like they know what they are doing but just haven't been in the business long enough to know the real cause of your problem and what the best solution is.
Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air only hires and uses experienced, trained professionals to do the work. Rest assured that when you call Bonney, someone is on the way who can fix your problem. So if you are wondering about all those rebates out there....we can help sort out what's best for you. Call Bonney Plumbing Heating and Air today at 916-444-0551.

Furnace Season Has Begun
So, how's that furnace doing, anyway? It hasn't been on for quite a while and now it's time to see if it's going to work this winter. Do you have that sinking feeling that this year may be the year you'll have to call the repair man?
Well, you do have options. First of all, if you don't have a systematic maintenance schedule for your heater now may be the time to get one. By choosing a company with Nate certified technicians to routinely fine tune your furnace or heat pump you can be assured that your equipment is operating as efficiently as possible. Sometimes a few adjustments is all it takes to get more life out of your furnace.
Another option is to retire your old heater with a new one. Not only are new gas furnaces and electric heat pumps more efficient, they are quieter and are much better at properly climatizing your home by using up to date technology. New heating systems also come with some great warranties so you won't even have to think about repair costs for up to 10 years!
It's a great time to consider a new unit because of all the incentives that are still available.....but they are running out. The $1,500.00 Federal Tax Credit is coming to an end December 31st of this year. This incentive has helped make purchasing a new furnace more affordable for many homeowners. With only a few months left in the year it might make sense to take advantage of this Tax Break before it is gone forever.
Money tight? It is for everyone these days. That is why there are some great financing options. With acceptable credit, you can have a quality furnace installed with new warranties and added comfort for less than you might think, and take advantage of the Tax Credit before it is gone.
Sound interesting? Feel free to call the friendly folks at Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air. They use Nate Certified Technicians who are drug tested and background checked who are trained to know the best ways to keep your system running perfectly. And, if you'd like to consider taking advantage of the Federal Tax Credit to get a new system, they can help you with that too.

The High Operating Costs of an old Air Conditioner
Ever wonder about those SEER ratings and how they can affect your power bill? I have a lot of my customers that have asked me what SEER stands for and how important it is to their decision making process, and that is a discussion for another day, but for now let's take a real life example of how this affects your pocketbook.
Let's suppose you have an air conditioner that is 12 years old. At that age it is not uncommon to have a SEER rating of about 6. Taking that for a base for our example let's do some math. If your system is 3 Tons that equals 36,000 BTU of cooling for your home. Simply divide that number by your current SEER, which is 6, and we come up with 6000 watts per hour to run your AC. That equates to 6 kilowatts per hour.
Now, let's take an arbitrary cost per kilowatt hour (kwh) at $.12 per hour and multiply by 6. That equals $.72 cents per hour to run your AC. Now if you ran it 10 hours per day for 20 days, that would equal $172.80 to run your system that month. You can see how running it more would affect your power bill.
Now, let's substitute 14.5 SEER for this example, which would reflect the purchase of a new, efficient system. Doing the same math as our example above, I come up with $.30 per hour to operate with a monthly bill of $71.51. Quite a savings.
So it's easy to see that changing out your equipment with a newer, efficient one will really cut those operating costs.
If you have more questions or would like me to calculate your savings based on switching to a newer Air Conditioner, just contact me, James, at Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air at 916-444-0441 and we can chat over the phone or schedule a time for us to get together at your convenience.
Hope this helps, and have a cool summer!

Seven Bonney Technicians Now NATE Certified!

April 30,2010
Local Technicians Pass National“Excellence” Test—Homeowners Benefit
Sacramento - What do you do if you’re a homeowner with a heating or cooling equipment problem but you don’t know a reliable, knowledgeable technician? Do you just pick someone randomly out of the phone book, or ask a friend who may not know more than you do? How do you know if the technician you pick really knows what they’re doing?
A national certification test has been developed, and is now being administered, to assure that technicians have the skills to do the job. North American Technician Excellence (NATE) offers these voluntary tests to technician in the areas of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration. The independent, not-for-profit organization is supported by an unprecedented combination of technicians, contractors, manufacturers, distributors, utilities, and heating and cooling contractors.
Bonney Plumbing, Heating, Air & Rooter Service of Sacramento is proud to announce that five of its technicians passed the NATE furnace and air conditioning service and installation tests on March 24, 2010. This increases the total number of NATE certified technicians to seven now employed by Bonney. This certification benefits local homeowners by giving them an independent standard by which to select a knowledgeable technician to work on their home comfort system.
“This certification really helps,” said Bill Horbaly, HVAC Operations Manager. “It’s a way that we can show our customers that we really care about doing the job right, and that we know how to get it done right the first time.” “Heating and cooling contractors today are trying to improve their industry’s image,” says NATE spokesperson Pat Lampel. “This certification test is national, independent, focused on current technology, and aimed at a high standard for technicians, so only the best will pass. This encourages all technicians to improve their skills in order to keep up with the pack, and that improves the overall industry for everyone!”

Hydronic Heat vs. Forced Air Furnaces
It is difficult to compare the benefits quantitatively between a forced air hydronic system and a forced air furnace. It is not an “apples to apples” comparison. However, looking at the systems side by side, the advantages of hydronic heat can be demonstrated.
Efficiency Through the Combination of Systems
Homes need hot water as well as warm air. Each system working independently has a measured efficiency factor, heat energy in vs. heat energy out. The efficiency of the furnace is fixed. But, the efficiency of a tanked hot water heater can be increased by increasing its use. Standing water creates the greatest heat loss in a tanked hot water system. The more that hot water is used, the less standing water is present and the less heat lost thereby increasing efficiency. A hydronic coil used to heat the air can provide this increased use. As well, efficiency is further increased as the water returning from the hydronic unit returns to the water heater at a higher temperature than tap water. So, if the hot water is used for heating the air as well, the efficiency is increased on all hot water usage.
Comfort and Quiet
Hydronic heat is more comfortable and quieter than forced air heat. Hydronic heat provides a lower temperature than typical furnaces (which is good). The lower temperature requires longer heating periods in the home reducing the needed fan speed and allowing for a quieter system. The goal being system operation without notice. As well, lower heat over a longer period creates consistent temperatures throughout the home with little variation from set point resulting in higher comfort.
Tankless Hydronic
A tankless water heater has various features that lend well to hydronic heating. First, it has no tank which eliminates heat loss from standing water. Second, its design is highly efficient. Models vary from 83% - 94% efficient which is much higher than standard tanked heaters. Third, tankless heaters have a modulating gas valve which opens only as far as demand is needed. It generates only the heat energy needed to hit set point. A tanked water heater opens at the maximum gas flow every time. For example, water returning from a hydronic heater will require a smaller temperature rise than water coming in from the tap. Therefore, the gas valve will open less using less energy to maintain set point. Fourth, tankless models are available that have two inputs and outputs with dual temperature control. This means that the ideal temperature can be maintained separately for the hydronic coil and the potable water.
In conclusion, a hydronic system, especially using a tankless water heater, provides efficiency for all home heating needs. Because of the increased efficiency in both air and water heating, it is very difficult to compare with standard tanked water heaters and forced air furnaces.
All this being said, if you would like to use a standard forced air furnace or heat pump system, there is much efficiency information available for these systems.

Home Energy Retrofits
Good morning,
SMUD has just sent us an invitation to participate in their new rebate program for Home Energy Retrofits.
The purpose of the program is to give home and business owners additional encouragement to make energy saving improvements on their homes.
Currently, SMUD offers rebates for efficiency improvements including up to $650 for high efficiency air conditioning replacements. The new program will not only increase these values up to $3500 (potentially) but also encourages a complete look at the building's energy usage.
The federal government has also been working on a program called Home Star that will be offering similar rebates.
Furthermore, California has authorized a new finance vehicle that is being released county by county for the very same energy saving improvments.
As a result of these overlapping programs, great savings will be available! Bonney has been gearing up to offer these whole house energy retrofit options to our customers. We have already hired Scott Blunk to direct our program. An expert in green building, Scott has partnered with SMUD on many "green" projects. We are excited to have the best in the field of energy retrofits to head our program!
To briefly mention Placer County, Roseville Electric is continuing to have double air conditioning rebates (up to $1500) through May 31. Also, the county has recently launched mPower, their version of an easy to qualify financing program for energy efficient improvments.
Look for more news as these programs roll out! Consider your homes energy usage and call Bonney for a FREE whole house energy audit they we are offering for a limited time.

Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air "... as Seen on the DIY Network"
Last week, I was contacted by a producer of the DIY Network television show House Crashers. They asked if we would install a ductless mini-split heat pump for a small remodeling project they were doing here in Sacramento.
Our Installation Manager, Gary, and our Lead, Matt, spent all afternoon and early evening Monday to assist with the project.
Matt and Gary did a great job filling their new roles as movie stars. However, as they were doing their tasks, the cameraman would stop them and say, "Could you do that again?" Needless to say, it took a bit longer to complete the job than normal.
A ductless mini-split heat pump was a perfect application for this job, turning a patio into a room. Most mini-splits are very efficient, very quiet, and very comfortable.
The show should premier sometime in April. I will post the date when it is available. In the meantime, here is a link to their site: http://www.diynetwork.com/house-crashers/show/index.html
Also, don't forget about those doubled Roseville Rebates. This is a unique opportunity for Roseville residents. Find out more at: http://www.rosevillerebates.com/

My Furnace is getting older, is it time to repair or replace?
Nobody wants to think about replacing their heating and air conditioner. There are many more things to do with our hard earned money, right? Especially in this economy.
Well, there are some good reasons to consider replacing your older furnace. The Department of Energy's Energy Star Program recommends replacing your furnace if it is more than 15 years old with a new one and replacing your air conditioner if it is over 10 years old. You can check out their recommendations here:
http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=heat_cool.pr_checklist_consumers
Why 15 years on a furnace? Well, the first thing to consider is safety. You see, as a gas furnace ages it experiences stress in it's Heat Exchanger, which is where hot gasses from the flame flow through your unit. Over time these heat stresses can cause small cracks in the metal which can be very dangerous both for you and your family.
The next thing to think about is comfort. Furnaces have come a long way over the past 15 years. Now with features like Variable Speed and Modulating Gas Valves your home can feel more comfortable on those icy nights. Hot and Cold spots in your home can become a thing of the past if your Heating Specialist is able to recommend the correct Comfort System for your home.
Repairs are another thing to consider. If you are constantly having to repair your furnace the bills can really add up. And even if you haven't experienced repairs the chances of a breakdown really start to increase as the unit gets older-think of your car. If it was 15 years old, how do you think it would be holding up?
Operating Costs are another thing to consider as well. If your Furnace is one of the 80% furnaces it is wasting at least 20% of its fuel right out the flue pipe. A new, energy efficient furnace can reduce this costly waste to as little as 2-5% depending on what furnace you choose.
What shape is your duct-work in? Did you know that 30% of your heating energy could be escaping right out into your attic or crawl space? That's a lot of waste, and with today's new standards of sealing ducts this inefficiency can be virtually eliminated.
A lot to think about, but with the help of a professional heating and air company like Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air these decisions can be made much easier. Call us or email and a friendly, helpful member of our staff will speak with you about your heating needs. Estimates are free, and we can even help with convenient payment plans that best suit your needs.

Roseville Rebates Doubled!!!
This limited rebate offer alone should be enough reason to buy, but it represents just one of several rebates and credits that are currently available to home owners. Total credits and rebates easily top $4000 in a single system! This really is the best time for Roseville home owners to buy for the past few years.
Let me break it down...
Thanks to President Obama, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides a $1500 tax credit for qualifying systems through December 31st of 2010.
Next, some equipment manufacturers are offering rebates up to $1200. The timing can be tricky on these, and the systems are specific, but these systems are available.
Besides, Roseville Electric, PG&E has rebates up to $300 that are also available for Roseville residents for certain gas furnaces. Again, these are specific furnaces.
Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air, is offering instant rebates up to $500 on these qualifying systems. These rebates are available as a special incentive to home owners while the double Roseville rebates are offered.
Finally, add the doubled Roseville Electric rebate and the total, for the right system, would be $5000.
Now, don't get me wrong, not all systems will qualify for a $5000 rebate. Most home owners will qualify for $3500 - $4000.
An example of a system that we just sold to a satisfied customer was a 15 SEER 12.5 EER with a 95% AFUE furnace (these are qualifying efficiency numbers.) This system qualifies for the federal tax credit of $1500, the top Roseville rebate of $1500, $200 from PG&E, $800 from the manufacturer, and $500 from Bonney for a total of $4500. This is a huge discount on the cost of a new system!
To summarize, this is a great opportunity for Roseville home owners. I would highly suggest taking advantage of this opportunity before the rebates exprie or the funds are depleted.
If you have any questions about these rebates, you can visit our website at www.BonneyPlumbing.com/rosevillerebates/ or give myself or James Merts a call at Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air: 444-0551.
Don't miss out!

"I'm sorry ma'am; you have a cracked heat exchanger."
Unfortunately, this quote is becoming a sales tool, whether or not it's true! At Bonney, we don't sell on fear.
In my weekly training meetings, my techs are telling me that they are frequently following other Sacramento heating and air contractors that are telling home owners that their heat exchangers have failed, and they are not offering any proof.
The heat exchanger is the heart of a furnace and its failure can allow carbon monoxide to enter your home. Carbon monoxide exposure causes health problems and, at high levels, can be deadly. A failed heat exchanger is a serious diagnosis and proof should be offered to the home owner.
The cost to replace a failed heat exchanger is substantial and usually is enough to justify the replacement of the furnace. So, you can see why a heating and air technician would be motivated to wrongly tell a home owner that the heat exchanger is bad, when it may not be. It creates fear in the customer and manipulates them to make a wrong choice. New equipment sales are much more lucrative than a simple furnace repair. This kind of fear mongering takes advantage of home owners and makes every contractor in the industry look bad.
I am so concerned about this issue, that I have instructed my technicians to offer free heat exchanger evaluations whenever a home owner has been told by another company that their heat exchanger has failed. And, Bonney technicians offer proof.
There are several ways to check for a cracked heat exchanger. But, here are two tools that we use to offer proof. First, we use a video inspection camera. If you can see a crack on the camera, it's cracked. However, the camera can not reach into every area of the heat exchanger, it still may miss failures. So, our second apporach is to use an exhaust gas analyzer. Most heating and air companies don't own this expensive tool. It uses a probe and a small computer to analyze your furnaces exhaust gas. This tool provides definitive proof as to whether or not the heat exchanger has failed. No guessing involved.
At Bonney, we don't use fear to sell. We don't take advantage of home owners. And, we offer proof.
If someone has told you that your furnace has a cracked heat exchanger, let us provide you with proof. Our free diagnosis will give you peace of mind and allow you to make a furnace replacement decision based on knowledge, not fear.
